The open road

December 25th, 2007

These two shots sum up what I love about the Scottish Highlands – the dramatic scenery and the clear open roads. Driving in the UK doesn’t get much better than this. More of Scotland here.

Beware walkers!

December 25th, 2007

A warning to those following a coastal footpath in Dorset. Enjoy your walk, but tread carefully!

Open day at Hounslow Mosque

December 25th, 2007

My local mosque had a 3-day event “to increase communication within the local community and help towards fostering a spirit of friendship and understanding”. The building was open to all regardless of faith (or lack thereof!) It has an impressive chandelier, a couple more photos here. More on Islam here.

Beware falling sharks!

December 25th, 2007

“Shark house”, Oxford. The owners battle with the local council who wanted the structure removed escalated all the way to the then Secretary of State for the Environment Michael Heseltine, whose inspector ruled in favour of the 25 foot fibreglass fish and so it remains.

Strange Mud

December 25th, 2007

I have no idea what caused these formations, taken on a footpath in Snowdonia.

Brookwood Cemetery

December 25th, 2007

At one time the largest cemetery in the world and still the largest in the UK. It once had its own railway which carried coffins from Waterloo. Around 240,000 people have been buried here. I like the way the statue appears to be showing us the tree!

Mind your head!

December 25th, 2007

On permanent display at the entrance to Ford Aerodrome (formerly RAF Ford) in West Sussex is a Hawker Hunter aircraft. A bit of work in Paint Shop Pro and it flies again! Shown underneath is the original aircraft shot. The beach shot was taken at Bognor Regis.

Unarmed

December 25th, 2007

Although this gesture looks like “stop” or “you may not pass”, in Buddhist Thailand the outstretched outward facing palm means “I am unarmed” (empty hand) expressing peace. In the face of hostility it is used to express fearlessness. I don’t know what the chap on the pole is doing (other than watching the sun set). More photos from Thailand here.

Wimbledon Windmill

December 25th, 2007

Some nice warm colours looking up inside the windmill, now a museum.

Lens

December 25th, 2007

This is the lighthouse at Portland Bill. If you look carefully you can see the sea reflected in the glass. More photos of the area here.
